How To Pick Your Mineral Foundation
How to Pick Your Mineral Foundation
We all know that the ultimate goal is a natural mineral foundation that looks like your own skin—only better, but it's tricky to get it right. Should you buy sheer, oil-free or full-coverage? There are countless formulas, finishes and different techniques for applying them.
So, how do you pick your foundation? First of all, let’s get one thing straight: the best foundation will disappear on your face. It won't settle into fine lines or highlight large pores.
Liquid or powder foundation? What coverage level should you choose?
Recognising your skin type is a must when choosing the proper foundation.
Keep in mind that most women's skin type changes with the weather. In winter, you might be dry, while in summer you might be oily. So having 2 different foundations is the best bet.
We also recommend you picking a foundation on the lighter side as a default when you're not sure exactly what kind of coverage you need.
Liquid or cream foundation is basic terms for foundations that come in liquid form. They can go from medium to full coverage depending on how much you apply.
A tinted moisturiser doesn’t offer as much coverage as a foundation but it will cover up some unevenness. This is the best choice for women with pretty good skin. A tinted moisturiser is a great bet in warmer months when little coverage is required.
You should go with a heavier foundation if your skin truly warrants it. So go with oil-based foundations which adds a lot of moisture. This foundation is a great choice for anyone with dry skin and for women who want to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
What about stick foundations? Well, first of all, these are great because it’s easy to carry them in a small purse and never worry about spills. The coverage tends to be heavier, making them perfect for covering up blemishes and dark under-eye circles. Stick foundations are best for normal to oily skin. This is not a great option for mature skin because it’s heavy for fine lines and wrinkles.
If your skin is oily or the weather in your area is particularly humid, an oil-free foundation is your best bet. They tend to dry quickly, so keep in mind that you will want to blend it in with a sponge or your fingers as soon as you apply.
If you are seeking a foundation that gives skin the appearance of having no foundation on at all and you have a normal to dry skin, a sheer foundation is a great bet. The coverage is light so it won't give you "cake face” and it tends to be build-able if you do want more coverage.
Let’s now get to powder foundation which comes in compact form, perfect for on-the-go portability. It's basically a powder and foundation in one.
For women interested in natural, organic makeup, mineral foundation is your absolute best bet because it is made up almost always primarily of minerals, which come from nature. It's a great bet for women with sensitive skin or allergies and even for older women with fine lines and wrinkles.

Did you know only 15 percent of women choose the correct shade?
To keep this simple, there are (golden) yellow- and (rosy) pink-based shades. So if it's rosy, you probably have a cool undertone (fair skin), if it's golden you probably have a warm undertone. Most women use yellow-based foundations, which look most natural on all skin tones. You still don’t know what shade you are? Consider your hair and eye colour. Those with blue, grey or green eyes, and blonde, brown or black hair are cooler in tone than those with brown, amber or hazel eyes and strawberry blonde, red, brown or black hair.
When talking about colour, keep in mind that a liquid foundation in the bottle is a certain colour, and it can oxidise on the face and change colour as it dries. Do your homework when selecting a shade and either test the foundation and let it sit for a few hours before buying it (plus, check your makeup in an area where natural light is flooding), or talk to the makeup artist provided by the brand when buying online.
You want to match your foundation to the colour your skin most often is, so if you regularly self-tan, take this into account.
To test, apply a stroke of up to three colours on a cheek or the jawline (and no, the inner wrist or hand aren't the best spots for testing foundation).
Our customer services team would love to help you choose your mineral foundation shade.
SPF or No SPF?
Many foundations these days come with SPF, but the amount is not enough to properly protect you. Supplement with a SPF cream under the foundation.
Never apply foundation to un-moisturised skin! If your skin is on the drier side, you’ll also want to exfoliate first. In case of liquid foundation, warm the product in the palm of your hand, and then sweep it across your face and neck using clean fingers, a foundation brush, a beauty blender or a combination of those choices. Don’t forget about the spot where your jawline meets your neck!
If you go with mineral foundation, the great this is that a little goes an awful long way. Pour a small amount of the foundation into the lid of the pot as this helps avoid using large amounts and keeps things tidy too. After your brush is loaded, dab it off on the side of the pot of the sifter jar to dust off any excess powder. Apply the makeup in gentle circular motions on the skin and repeat several times all over the face paying attention to all areas including.
